The graduate programme in Govt. College of Nursing, Thiruvanathapuram, was started in the year 1972 under Kerala University with an annual intake 25 students on merit basis. Now the college has an annual intake of 78 students per batch out of this 3 seats are reserved for students from Jammu & Kashmir under PMSSS. The aim of the undergraduate nursing program is to:
- Prepare graduates to assume responsibilities as professional, competent nurses and midwives in providing promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative services.
- Prepare nurses who can make independent decisions to protect the rights and facilitate individuals and groups in pursuit of health.
- Prepare nurses to function in the hospital, community nursing services, and conduct research studies in the areas of nursing practice. They are also expected to assume the role of teacher, supervisor, and manager in a clinical/ public health setting/ school of nursing.
The duration of course is 4 years. After the successful completion of the course students are eligible for one year compulsory Nursing Service with stipend.
Candidates who have passed Higher Secondary Examination of the Board of Higher Secondary Education, Kerala, or examinations recognized equivalent thereto, with 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English put together, are eligible.
